Amália Rodrigues
Rooted in African and Arabic cultures, 'Fado' was first sung by homesick Portuguese sailors in the 15th and 16th centuries. Sometimes described as a cross between blues and opera. Commonly hailed as the voice of Portugal, Amália Rodrigues was one of the brightest singers of the twentieth century. Amália made an outstanding contribution to the history of 'Fado', a genre that was originally introduced to use the words of the great Portuguese poets in music.
