Charli XCX's debut album True Romance stands today as one of the most distinctive works from the early 2010s wave of dark Tumblr-pop. The album was released in April 2013 and established her not only as a singer, but as a prominent songwriter and artist with a unique ability to combine raw emotional vulnerability with shimmering electronic soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from witch house, synth-pop, and a goth-tinged aesthetic, True Romance captured the bittersweet euphoria of teenage crush, heartbreak, and obsession and laid the foundation for one of modern pop music's most exciting careers. The album was produced in collaboration with Ariel Rechtshaid and Patrik Berger, among others, and features prominent tracks such as "Nuclear Seasons", "You (Ha Ha Ha)", and "Stay Away".

Although True Romance only achieved modest commercial success, the album was met with great enthusiasm from critics, who particularly highlighted its cohesive aesthetic and forward-thinking songwriting. The release built a dedicated cult following and cemented Charli XCX as an interesting voice within alternative pop. The songs from this period showcased her unique ability to write irresistible pop hooks wrapped in an experimental sound universe – a combination that quickly drew the interest of major record labels and paved the way for her breakthrough as a songwriter behind several global radio hits.
