The Importance of Being Earnest

This title The Importance of Being Ernest, set in Victorian England, the plot revolves around the protagonist John (or Jack) and Ernest, his fictional brother. The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career, but it also foreshadowed his downfall. The Marquis of Queensberry, whose son Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover, planned to gift the writer a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and denied entry to Queensberry. It was the last comedy Wilde wrote and is considered one of his best works.
