Four Meetings
Henry James
Four Meetings was written by American-born British author Henry James, and first published in 1877. The story recounts four meetings of the narrator with a Miss Caroline Spencer, a young American woman in Europe with an almost innocent zeal for European culture. However, our narrator witnesses the exploitation and destruction of the young American woman in Europe. It is primarily study of attraction and conflict, of new and old, innocence and experience, ardour and complexity, the puritanical and the aesthetic. Despite Caroline Spencer's passionate dreams about European civilisation, they only lead to her final downfall.
