The hero of the novel is the Irish terrier Jerry, who was a dog brother named Michael, about whom London wrote another novel: Michael, Jerry's brother. In the preface, Jack London tells of the Minota ship in which he traveled and which was wrecked in the Solomon Islands. Captain Kellar of the ship Eugenie rescued Jack London after the shipwreck, but later died at the hands of the cannibals.
