The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Robert Louis Stevenson
The book is known to be a vivid representation of a psychiatric disorder that causes the same person to have two or more identities or personalities with opposite characteristics. In psychiatry, this refers to dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder ). This psychopathology should not be confused with bipolar disorder, another completely different psychiatric disorder, belonging to a group of mental illnesses known as mood disorders, in which phases of mania alternate with phases of depression. It was an immediate success and one of Stevenson's best sellers. The theatrical adaptations began in Boston and London a year after its publication and continues to inspire multiple films and performances today. Jekyll is a scientist who creates a potion or drink that has the ability to separate the most human part from the most evil side of a person. When Jekyll drinks this mixture he turns into Edward Hyde, a criminal capable of any atrocity. According to what is told in the novel, in us good and evil are always together, that is why Hyde, symbol of everything evil, is repugnant to everyone who sees it.
