The Count of Monte Cristo
Alexandre Dumas
Edmond Dantes, an officer of a merchant vessel, is falsely accused of treason. Without trial, he is arrested, and imprisoned in the Chateau d'lf, a grim island fortress off Marseille. But he escapes, acquires fortune, and avenges himself on those responsible for his imprisonment with devastating consequences. It is an adventure novel with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness.
