It's 1804 and England expects an invasion try through Napoleon Bonaparte's armies. Near Budmouth Anne Garland lives together along with her widowed mom in a part of a flour mill, subsequent to their landlord and buddy miller William Loveday. Thousands of soldier's pitch camp at the downs nearby, geared up to fulfill the invasion. Anne draws the admiration of them, each with neighborhood connections: Trumpet Major John Loveday, the respectable and considerate son of the miller, and Yeomanry officer Festus Derriman, the conceited and competitive nephew of the skinflint neighborhood squire. Derriman has left all his assets to Anne, besides for some small homes if you want to offer Festus with a living, however now no longer luxury. Festus and Matilda are married, Anne and Bob are to be engaged, and John's regiment is posted away to war in Spain, where, we're told, he'll die.
