Fisheries sector plays an important role in the Indian economy. It contributes to the national income, exports, food and nutritional security and in employment generation. In hilly region, fish culture has been one of the important economic activities. Besides being a good source of nutritious diet, rich in animal protein, fishery also provides a good employment to a large number of rural populations. Fish farming is a potent source which can generate an additional income and employment for all the fish farmers. The major policy implications of the study are the need to follow proper pond management practices like cleaning, weeding, removal of predatory fishes, unwanted aquatic weeds and aquatic insects at right stage of the fish farming. Timely supply and easy accessibility of fish seeds of Indian major carps as well as exotic carps, suitable for cold water climate should be made available to fish farmers in required quantity. Efficient fish marketing network and infrastructure should be developed in the study area, so that fish farmers may get remunerative price for their fish product.
