More than a decade ago, Wendell Clausen published his treatise Virgil's Aeneid and the Tradition of Hellenistic Poetry (Berkeley, 1987), based on his Sather Lectures given in 1982. What was originally intended as a revision of his work on Virgil turned into an entirely new book: three chapters (I, V, VI) have been rewritten, the other five revised.
