Publisher Marketing: The subject of this monograph is clause connection in texts (with the emphasis on adverbial structures). It transpires that specific features in the structure of clauses can be related partly to the character of the text as 'language in action'. Syntactic subordination is explained in terms of a model geared to prototype theory. A text-pragmatic perspective is taken on the role of clause organization in texts, more specifically the role they play in the information and illocution structure of texts. The examples used are taken from newspaper/magazine texts, which in itself emphasizes an important result of this study: essential aspects of clause connection are only fully explainable by going beyond syntax alone and extending the discussion to the pragmatic structure of texts.
