Publisher Marketing: The Germanic languages from Gothic, Old Norse and Old Saxon to modern Dutch, English and German are the source of data for this collection of articles on diachronic verbal morphology. Central questions are the origins of strong and weak verbs, the development of tense, aspect and mood categories, and both their formal morphological or syntactic marking, and their implications for the semantics of the verb phrase. The articles are all theoretically informed, albeit from a wide range of frameworks, and issues of reconstruction, typology and analogy are discussed alongside grammaticalization, ergativity and polarity in order to shed new light on the diverse forms and functions of the Germanic verb. Contributor Bio:  Watts, Sheila Sheila Watts spent her early career at Trinity College Dublin, where she obtained her doctorate. Since 1998 she has been a University Lecturer in German at the University of Cambridge (Newnham College). She has worked on grammaticalisation in the history of German, particularly in Old Saxon, and on early modern linguistic historiography. Contributor Bio:  West, Jonathan Rhoda D'Ettore is a 15 year veteran with the United States Postal Service, having written her first book about the crazy antics that the public never sees. She is a lifelong resident of a Philadelphia suburb in New Jersey, and has a degree in Human & Social Services. She has been active in community service organizations which has benefitted US Veterans and abused animals.
