Wendy Lockinge, Vice Chancellor of a university set in the North of England, and formerly a celebrity detective, is battling against a drug crisis on campus. She also has to manage a problem relationship with daughter Jessica, who accuses her of abandoning the search for her missing father. When Jessica disappears from school, Wendy assembles a team of her university irregulars to find her, including a scientist with a pet python he uses to make his lectures more interesting, a local news reporter, a student activist, and a lecherous TV pundit. A series of mysterious and violent deaths occur in a nearby top secret research establishment, which seem connected to the drug problems that are plaguing the university. The team has stumbled into a battle for a century-old secret concealed in the archives of the university.
