Publisher Marketing: The elderly people in our communities face numerous challenges that go unnoticed all too often. Their struggles are real and not enough attention is paid to what these valuable members of our society encounter. In "The Golden Years?: Four Short Plays," playwright Maria Teresa H. de Holcomb tackles several of these issues in her realistic, touching stories. An elderly man reminisces about his life, his time during and after the war, and his beloved wife while dealing with the despair and frustration of losing some of his independence in "Jessie and Rosie." In "Allison" Alzheimer disease consumes an older woman as she struggles to keep it hidden from her husband, and herself, until they have no choice but to accept their harsh reality. "My Alter Ego" focuses on a woman entering into the golden years uses art to avoid loneliness and despair in order to overcome the trials and tribulations she faces. An extremely rich, partially deaf father struggles with two of his emotionally abusive children who seek to acquire their inheritance before his death in "Helmut." De Holcomb ultimately shows the various ways in which elderly people experience both joy and pain, thus drawing a connection between us all.
