U.s. Department of the Interior
The United States ranks as one of the top countries in the world in the number of young, active volcanoes within its borders. The United States, including the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, is home to approximately 170 geologically active (age <10,000 years) volcanoes (Siebert and Simkin, 2002-). As our review of the record shows, 30 of these volcanoes have erupted since 1980, many repeatedly. In addition to producing eruptions, many U. S. volcanoes exhibit periods of anomalous activity, unrest, that do not culminate in eruptions.
