A young child tells the story of how her Grandmother, Esther Highman, survived World War II. Esther is a young Jewish girl, living in Germany during Hitler's rise to power. Esther and her brother, Ira are removed from their school. They are not allowed to play with other children and their family is given a curfew. People in their town begin to turn on them. Synagogues and Jewish owned stores are set to flames. Jewish people are being captured and taken away. Esther and her family try to escape Nazi capture by hiding in their crawl space and in an abandoned barn. Esther and her family are finally captured and taken to Auschwitz Concentration Camp, in Poland. While at the camp, Esther is separated from her family. She does not know if they are alive. She must learn to survive on her own.
