This story is set in Mexico after the revolution, a time when banditos roamed the countryside, robbing and killing at will. Father Ortez, the head of the church built by James McCain, tells the story in retrospect.

It is the story of an Irishman, one named James McCain, who comes and settles down in the small village of LaPaz. James is a hard working and religious man, it tells of his finding work with the Patron of the area, one Senor Estaban. By his work ethic he brings prosperity not only to Senor Estaban but also the village. He builds a church, the only one for miles around. At the same time it tells how he and his wife are murdered by banditos.

Ricardo McCain, the son of Jimmy, vows revenge for the slaying of his parents and to do this he himself turns to banditry, robbing and killing with his own band of outlaws, but underneath this lies a very dark secret that Ricardo hides form the world and this secret is not revealed until the last chapter, when all is explained. It also poses the age-old questions 'Does the means justify the end'.

Woven into this story is another that of a love affair between a reporter form Chicago and a beautiful Mexican girl.

Read how a Saint dies and an angel loses his head (literally) read how a bandit sells his wife and lives happily ever after. Once you get into this story you will not put it down until you finish.
