The writer in his old age and forced to confinement due to illness and paralysis feels he may as well put them in fair type. For the glum subject he is not sorry, for the fact it is in the past- visiting and waiting on wounded and sick army volunteers, from campaigns or contests, or in hospitals or fields, the wounded, suffering, dying- the sweating summers, marches, battles and carnage... Theses poems are reminiscent and memorial of those times.
