In her book, Hilde Eliassen Restad challenges this assumption, arguing that U. S. history has displayed a remarkably constant foreign policy tradition, which she labels unilateral internationalism. The United States, Restad argues, has not vacillated between an "exemplary" and a "missionary" identity.
