When it was first published, the original author, Joseph Ames, had been dead for 50 years. As the title page explains, his work was considerably augmented by William Herbert and then 'greatly enlarged, with copious notes, and illustrated with appropriate engravings' by Thomas Frognall Dibdin. This volume considers the lives and work of printers from Reynold Wolfe to Thomas Hacket.
