George Back (1796–1878) initially volunteered to search for John Ross in the Canadian Arctic, but later explored the unknown Great Fish River down to the Arctic Ocean and west along the Arctic coast, travelling some 7,500 miles. This 1836 account is enhanced by engravings and appendices of scientific data.
