Homicide investigations begin at the scene of the crime and fan out as detectives and forensic technicians connect the evidentiary dots, moving toward a solution. Sometimes, the dots are not aligned in a logical fashion and form a web of unconnected facts. Then, a seemingly unrelated event occurs that pulls these facts together and reveals motives and participants never contemplated. In the early morning hours of July 10, 2016, detectives stood over the body of a gunshot victim who lay dying on the sidewalk of the southwest corner of Flagler Place and W Street Northwest in the upscale Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D. C. The detectives surmised he was a victim of an attempted robbery, but there were problems: the victim's cash-filled wallet and Rolex watch were not taken. And in time, they would discover how wrong their original conclusion was.
